The floor is the base of the interior of your homes and your work environments. Precisely because there are countless colours, styles and finishes that can satisfy every taste and personality, it is good that you are sure of your decision.
Among other things, it is useful to consider that the choice of the “nuance” of the floor may apparently seem of little importance. On the contrary, the colour you choose will have a significant impact on the visual structure of the home environment.
Through the colour you can, in fact, “modify” the house or the office, giving more or less light and more or less “personality” to the rooms. Hence the big doubt: is it better to choose a light or dark floor? Let’s analyse the characteristics of both choices.
Light colour floors: how and why
If you opt for a light colour floor, made of ceramic or porcelain stoneware, you will create a bright, elegant and modern environment.
If then, in addition to the colour, you will also choose a shiny surface, this will reflect even more light, giving a feeling of whiteness and cleanliness.
White floors give “breath” even to very narrow spaces and, more generally, the light colour always offers a sort of “illusion”: it makes even very small rooms look much larger!
The “disadvantages” related to the choice of a light coloured flooring
To understand if it is better to choose a light or dark floor, you should consider that the light surfaces emphasize the dirt. Therefore, it will require a greater effort when it comes to its cleaning.
Among other things, according to many, a too light floor can make the environment result “cold”. However, to eliminate the “problem” a priori, just select the right colours for the walls, and wisely use furniture and furnishing accessories.
In short, by studying the colour combinations well, everything can be solved! Just take the Nordic style as an example, which includes furniture that combines colours like white, grey, black, the colour of wood or natural stone, and sometimes even green or dark blue … These colours certainly do not make a home less welcoming!
Dark floors: a different solution, but still interesting
Differently from light floors, a darker porcelain stoneware could give another kind of illusion: it would make the room look smaller. Therefore, a dark floor is ideal for more spacious homes, but also for those to which you want to give a different and more original character.
In this case, to be able to well define the spaces, it may be useful to choose a large tile, so as to create a proper “depth” and definition of the spaces.
What are the “disadvantages” of dark floors?
Even dark floors need to be accompanied by a conscious choice regarding the colour of the walls and furnishings: it is preferable to opt for delicate colours and / or for bright colours … (as long as they are lighter than the chosen flooring). The perfect furniture in these cases is the one with a minimal style.
A small trick to give more largeness to the rooms with a dark flooring is to combine a skirting board in the same colour of the floor: it will create a very pleasant effect of continuity and make the room visually larger.
Light or dark floors? The choice is yours!
It is obvious that every building has its own characteristics based on exposure to light and its size. Even the type of home (be it a loft or a villa) could influence your choice. However, do not forget that what matters most is your personal taste. Your home will have to become the “home of your dreams”. Therefore, follow the advice of the experts, but do not put your preferences aside!
